Architecture education at our university—known at the time as the Joseph Royal Polytechnic University—began in 1871 within the Department of Architecture and Engineering. Our first professors were the defining architects of the era, including:
Nearly every significant Hungarian architect graduated from our Faculty, which prides itself on these deep-rooted traditions. Architects from the University of Technology were already highly sought after across Europe and even overseas as early as the first half of the 20th century.
The BME degree in Architecture was among the first Hungarian qualifications to be recognized without restrictions within the European Union. Today, the diplomas issued by our Faculty are accepted and respected worldwide.
Architectural activity is simultaneously artistic and technical in nature. The traditional strength of our curriculum lies in the balance between these two fields: alongside mastering technical and engineering sciences, the development of artistic creativity is given equal priority.
This dual nature sets our program apart from standard degrees and is relatively rare on a global scale. In many international schools, technical subjects are often negligible, while in others, an overemphasis on engineering can stifle design-oriented training.
The prestige of our teaching staff is reflected by the fact that our full-time faculty includes three members of the Academy of Sciences and three Kossuth Prize winners. Currently, 82 of our instructors hold advanced scientific degrees, and 10 hold the title of Professor.
The works of our faculty members are fundamental to contemporary Hungarian architecture, and many other outstanding architects contribute to our programs as guest lecturers. Furthermore, our staff is responsible for numerous scientific breakthroughs—for instance, the creators of the world-famous “Gömböc” are also instructors at our Faculty.
