Cobwebs atthe Faculty!

The exhibition of student installations made within the framework of Specialisation Project Course was attended by a large number of interested students, teachers and representatives of the companies providing the materials.

The Project Course is the first design course of the Form and Structure Specialisation, where fourth-year students start to learn about parametric design at the beginning of the semester. The buzzword of the semester was “Cobweb”, and the design space was a 3-meter edge-length cube frame per team, within which a formally exciting, structurally correct, prestressed installation had to be designed and realized.

KÉSZ Ipari Gyártó Kft. provided the raw material for the steel frame, while the rope and the rope mesh for the tensioned structures were provided by Orsó’95 Kft. and Kötéltechnika Kft.

During the semester, planning and redesigning continued until the detailed design was finalised, as feasibility ultimately impacts on the initial conditions. This constantly changing set of conditions can be managed using Rhino3D+Grasshopper parametric design software. Within this program, each team defined the key design parameters and the algorithm to generate the spatial model. From the accurate spatial model, the pattern of the surface structures and the exact length of each section of the rope mesh structures could be determined. The installations are structures of high degree of statical overdeterminacy  that gain their final, tight shape when the realized structure is an exact replica of the designed model. From the students’ point of view, this meant that the planned form was only complete when the last rope was tightened and the last fixings were placed – in the worst case, it was only then that errors and inaccuracies were revealed.

The exhibition is currently on show on the 3rd floor of Building K, in the Department of Graphics, Form and Design, room K3.22,  Mondays between 9-14:00 or by appointment.

Project Title

Far far away, behind the word mountains, far from the countries Vokalia and Consonantia, there live the blind texts. Separated they live in Bookmarksgrove right at the coast of the Semantics, a large language ocean. A small river named Duden flows by their place and supplies it with the necessary regelialia. It is a paradisematic country, in which roasted parts of sentences fly into your mouth.
