Chemnitz is calling on the next generation of architects and urban planners! The Saxony Chamber of Architects, in collaboration with the City of Chemnitz and Baukultur für Chemnitz e. V., is launching a European student competition to envision a vibrant new future for the area behind the Karl Marx Monument.
As part of the European Capital of Culture 2025, this initiative—CHEMNITZ INSIDE: UPGRADE + CONNECT—aims to transform an underutilized city-center space into a dynamic hub for culture and sports. Students from across Europe are invited to submit their innovative concepts by July 31, 2025.
Your Chance to Make an Impact
Right now, the area behind the “Parteifalte” mainly used as a parking lot, has long been overlooked. This competition seeks fresh ideas to create an engaging public space that connects Brühl, Theaterplatz, and the city center. One potential highlight: a multi-purpose hall that could become the future home of the Niners basketball team.
Around 100 Days to make it happen
Starting in mid-March, students will have the opportunity to work on their ideas. After submitting their works by July 31, 2025, the entries will be presented to a jury and subsequently evaluated.
Residents of Chemnitz will play a key role in shaping their city’s future. In the week leading up to the awards, all submitted works will be displayed for public voting, with the most popular design receiving a special public prize.
