July 31, 2026, marks the 100th anniversary of Alajos Hauszmann’s death. Together with descendants of the family, Tamás Varga—Dean of the BME Faculty of Architecture—remembered one of the founders of Hungarian architectural education and placed flowers at the grave of the former University of Technology professor.
HAUSZMANN 100 Memorial Year
Alajos Hauszmann was one of the most prominent Hungarian architects and university professors at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, whose work fundamentally defined the development of domestic architectural culture. He is credited with the design of numerous outstanding public buildings—such as the BME Central Building, the Royal Curia, the New York Palace, the Palace of Justice, and the Buda Royal Castle—though his legacy as an educator and professor is equally significant. During his decades at the University of Technology, he educated generations of students, many of whom went on to become defining figures of Hungarian architecture themselves. As a university leader, he not only headed his own Faculty but also served as rector.
2026 marks the centenary of his death, an occasion the Faculty of Architecture at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics wishes to commemorate in a fitting manner. The objective of the series of events is to promote Hauszmann’s life’s work and bring it closer to both the general public and university students, while also re-examining his oeuvre from a scientific perspective. The program plan places strong emphasis on implementing events with the active and hands-on participation of students, bridging the past with the present.
